DrumLine Live (Kerrville), January 16 & 17, 7:30 p.m.
The show-stopping new attraction, DrumLine Live, brings the black marching band tradition to the theatrical stage for the very first time. Featuring a large cast of energetic and flamboyant performers from Americas top Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the production presents the rousing and rhythmic sounds of the great brass past including Earth, Wind, and Fire and Tower of Power side by side with the hottest contemporary hip hop and R&B. The stirring sound of trumpets, explosive choreography, and incredible feats of athleticism from the "steppers" and dancers, will bring the audience to its feet. But the stars of the show are unquestionably the talented group of African American percussionists who form the "drumline." The showdown of rhythm and speed between the "lines" will shock you with its precision and pulsing force. KDH Dance Company's Tenth Anniversary Season (Austin), February 7, 14 & 21 at 6 & 8 p.m.
KDH Dance Company celebrates its tenth anniversary with three different concerts highlighting both excerpts and full-length productions of some of its most colorful and dynamic works. This February, KDH Dance presents the second concert of the series, featuring favorite moments from Spin, Woman Smiling, Blurred and Slammed. Because only excerpts are shown in this concert, Artistic Director Kathy Dunn Hamrick briefly introduces each of the four selections before its performance, supplying background information and context as well as the inside scoop. “I chose these particular dances because of their diversity and breadth. While each dance has its own voice or singular style, audiences will definitely be able to see the type of choreography and dancing that defines us a company. Pilobolus (Houston), February 13, 8 p.m.
Expect the unexpected with this widely popular contemporary dance company! “Pilobolus is a mind-blowing troupe of wildly creative and physically daring dancers who leap, fly, intertwine and break all the rules,” says Newsday. The program will include the remounting of Ocellus, the second work created by the original four members. Ballet Austin's Hamlet (Austin), February 13 - 15
Stephen Mills’ contemporary ballet Hamlet was first staged for Ballet Austin in 2000. Since then, it has been performed by numberous other companies around the country. Garth Fagan, Founder and Artistic Director, has been called "a true original," "a genuine leader," and "one of the great reformers of American dance." Celebrations of Traditions Pow Wow, April 18, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Celebrations of Traditions Pow Wow is an official Fiesta event that will provide all who attend, individuals and families, the opportunity to view and participate in the American Indian culture and traditions of dance and music at an official Native American Pow Wow. The pow wow promotes tribal traditions, culture and the opportunity for Native people to gather in celebrating their rich heritage with one another. The pow wow is sponsored by United San Antonio Pow Wow Inc., a Texas nonprofit chartered, federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to promote the traditions and culture of the American Indian. Through the pow wow, American Indians can pass these traditions to their children and grandchildren so the culture can be maintained and enriched—learning the honored ways of the past. The annual Praise Dance Celebration engages the community to recognize and appreciate the creativity of worship through the expressions of dance. This outreach service project, sponsored by the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., is designed to promote and support the arts in the community. Area church denominations with praise dance teams and individuals are invited by the sorority to participate in a program showcasing their interpretation, reflection and spiritual embrace of divine worship.
